ABOUT ABOUT

As part of the Planning Beyond Paper initiative, Delaware County Planning Department is hosting a three-part series on Placemaking: the act of creating vibrant spaces for communities. Successful Placemaking initiatives have produced community parks, long-lasting traditions, and vibrant spaces in which communities gather and delight.

As the second session of the series, Placemaking Part Two: The Logistics of Placemaking will bring together local experts to provide insight and perspective on the nitty-gritty parts of placemaking, from funding, to permitting, to overcoming challenges along the way. Todd Bressi, Coordinator of Artistic Planning for the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program, will talk about the importance of the arts in creating vibrant places, while sharing examples of projects that have transformed city spaces across the country. Todd will recognize the challenges, triumphs, and hurtles in-between that he has faced in placemaking. Zubair Khan, Executive Director of the Media Business Authority will share his experiences in planning and managing Media's famous Dining Under the Stars. Zubair will speak about local challenges and considerations that must be taken when planning for large-scale placemaking events. Finally, Susan Williams, a former Councilwoman for Lansdowne Borough, will speak about her experience in imagining, planning, and building Lansdowne Landing. Susan will recognize the challenges she faced with funding, man-power, and limited public space, and describe her journey in overcoming them. Together, Todd, Zubair, and Susan will share their experiences in facilitating placemaking projects. Following the presentations, a mini-workshop will encourage attendees to think critically about their resources and apply the strategies they have learned.

This event is geared toward elected officials, municipal staff, professional planners and economic development officials, and non-profit leaders looking to make a lasting impact on their community. While Placemaking Part One: Identifying Your Community's Strengths was helpful in laying the foundation for what placemaking is, attendance is not required to participate in Placemaking Part Two: The Logistics of Placemaking.

*Please note that the cost of this event is $11.50 (service fee included), to cover the cost of your refreshments.
